There are many great masters of abstract art, but here are some of the most important figures:


Pioneers of Abstract Painting

  • Wassily Kandinsky:

    • Considered one of the founders of abstract art, he expressed emotions and spirituality through color and form.

    • He is known for his "Impressions," "Improvisations," and "Compositions" series.

  • Piet Mondrian:

    • Famous for his geometric abstract paintings using horizontal and vertical lines, and the primary colors red, blue, and yellow.

    • His "Composition" series is his representative work.

  • Kazimir Malevich:

    • Proposed his own theory called "Suprematism" and created extremely simple abstract paintings, such as a black square or a white background.

    • "Black Square" is a landmark work in art history.

Abstract Expressionist Painters

  • Jackson Pollock:

    • Created dynamic abstract paintings using the "pouring" technique, dripping and throwing paint onto the canvas.

    • "No. 5, 1948" is one of his representative works.

  • Mark Rothko:

    • Created abstract paintings that appeal to the viewer's emotions by layering colors.

    • "Rothko Chapel" is famous as a meditation space where his works are exhibited.

  • Willem de Kooning:

    • Abstractly expressed figures and landscapes with powerful brushstrokes and vivid colors.

    • His "Woman" series is his representative work.

Other Masters

  • Frank Stella:

    • Frank Stella, who passed away on May 4, 2024, was a leading figure in post-war American abstract painting, establishing an unshakable position in art history with his repetition of geometric forms and industrial appearance.

These painters pursued the possibilities of abstract painting in their own unique styles and had a great influence on later artists.
